It took awhile but I’ve posted all of the text from Iain Macnab’s book called The Student’s Book of Wood-Engraving published in 1938. I’ve included some wood engraving illustrations found in the book as well. Scottish artist Ian Macnab was the founder and principal of the famous Grosvenor School of Modern Art and was best [...]
Relief Printing on an Etching Press

I’ve updated an earlier post dealing with the challenge of printing relief on an etching press. Printmaker Maria Arango Diener suggested using discarded rubber blankets from the commercial lithography industry to use on your etching press for cushioning between the steel rollers and the woodcut or wood engraving block instead of cardboard. The post is [...]

Here’s a couple of woodcuts by JJ Lankes. Even though they aren’t wood engravings, his work does have the feel of an engraving rather than plank grain work.
He was born in Buffalo, New York in 1884. In his youth he trained and worked as a draughtsman before going on to study art at the Art Student’s League of Buffalo and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

The image above is called Undulating Spirits. I’ve been working on it for awhile because of a renewed interest in fractal geometry. In this case I projected some fractal shapes onto a grungy surface. Fractals of course are shapes that repeat themselves on different scales to make up a whole shape. They can be found in nature such as the fern leaf or can be generated using fancy algorithms discovered by Benoit Mandelbrot, the father of fractal geometry.

A continuum. The point at which deliberate order and reactive composition come together. The place where aestheticism meets spontaneous textural muscularity.
Charged by relational and discordant influences and polarities, the thrust is to pool these diverse energies and disciplines to build up and dismantle them at will thereby creating a new relationship between them. Art has a design.

Art and the Police

The police culture of today is a militaristic entity which serves the interests of the governing power and not those who gave government the power first. Yes, they cultivate the appearance of outreach and caring when the optics require it. Ultimately the true culture of policing prevails and is something we should no longer tolerate, especially when it comes to the arena of public protest as illustrated in Toronto during the summer of 2010.

Here’s a really great article by Megan Graham of the Klondike Sun. She came over to dad’s studio and spent quite a few hours being entertained by his ramblings and wisdom. Interview with Ilgvars Steins When I sat down to talk with Ilgvars Steins about his current exhibition at the Confluence Members’ Gallery at SOVA, [...]
